Full Job Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic and motivated individual to join a team of dedicated staff within our Cardiac theatres. The post holder will practice under the supervision of the Surgical Care Practitioners and the Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons. The Surgical Care Practitioner team is well established within the University Hospitals of Leicester, working on the Glenfield and Leicester Royal Infirmary sites. Full training will be given in Adult and Paediatric Cardiac Surgery. The management of the Surgical Care Practitioner service falls under the RRCV CMG. You must hold an RGN, Operating Department Practitioner or Perfusion degree qualification and be willing to undergo educational training to Masters Level on a relevant Surgical Care Practitioner course. Full training will be done on the Glenfield and LRI site. Working alongside the qualified Surgical Care Practitioner team, the Student Surgical Care Practitioner will learn and participate in operative procedures as well as all aspects of pre and post-operative care. The Student Surgical Care Practitioner will learn to perform these roles with a high degree of clinical skill and specialist knowledge gained while training. They will develop during their training, substantial experience of a wide range of cardiac surgical procedures and techniques. The Student Surgical Care Practitioner will work closely within the Consultant Cardiac Surgical team structure and whilst training will be expected to learn advanced levels of clinical judgment and independent practice in the delivery of safe patient care. There are presently a team of Six Surgical Care Practitioners working across 2 sites of the Organisation within a multidisciplinary team in Cardiac theatres. Working alongside the qualified Surgical Care Practitioner team, the Student Surgical Care Practitioner will learn and participate in operative procedures as well as all aspects of pre and post-operative care. The Student Surgical Care Practitioner will learn to perform these roles with a high degree of clinical skill and specialist knowledge gained while training. They will develop during their training, substantial experience of a wide range of cardiac surgical procedures and techniques. The Student Surgical Care Practitioner will be taught to work in all aspects of elective and emergency Adult and Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery. They will be taught in Adult and Paediatric ECMO and Vascular procedures as required. Additionally once qualified they will be expected to provide assistance during breast and general, surgical procedures as required, both on an elective and emergency basis. The Student Surgical Care Practitioner will work closely within the Consultant Cardiac Surgical team structure and whilst training will be expected to learn advanced levels of clinical judgment and independent practice in the delivery of safe patient care. The Student Surgical Care Practitioner will develop the skills to offer knowledge and support to all members of the multidisciplinary team. During the training period, the Student Surgical Care Practitioner will be expected to undertake their academic training at a registered Surgical Care Practitioner training course.

  • To be taught how to act as first or second assistant under the direction of a Consultant Surgeon and Senior Surgical Care Practitioner in adult and Paediatric Cardiac procedure

  • To be taught how to undertake the surgical procedure of conduit harvesting (specifically the Long Saphenous Vein, Short Saphenous Vein and Radial Artery). Ensure the conduit is suitable for grafting and appropriate closure of the wound.
